Hugh has drawn and painted with many influential artists but is otherwise self taught. Based on observed drawing, he paints portraits, the figure, landscapes and seascapes, mostly in oils. He lives in Richmond and his work has been exhibited locally in Richmond and Teddington and at the Mall Galleries in the West End.
“Each painting needs to truly express my idea which will evolve as the painting progresses. I persist until satisfied that the painting and the idea have blended (which can take ages) or the painting is scrapped. “
“The collaboration between artist and sitter makes portrait painting special for me. If possible I paint from life although I do use photographs as a tool. I aim to catch something of the essence of the sitter as well as a likeness and aliveness and also a mood unique to a painting.”
“My landscapes and seascapes are, almost always, at least begun on location. I simplify what I see and, increasingly influenced by tonal artists and colourists, I aim to express and communicate what it is that inspires my picture and my experience of the mass, movement and mood of the place and its emotional impact on me.”
