‘Art is my passion, colour and form intrigue me.’
Born in the bustling city of Johannesburg, South Africa, I was immersed in colour and a sense of something rather wild. After many years, we moved to the beautiful, and more peaceful Cape Town. I classify myself as a ‘creative’ rather than a traditional painter. I think conceptually and paint intuitively. I am inspired by whatever the day brings. There is a part of me that chooses to be spontaneous and another that makes me go into another more traditional mode and I feel so blessed to be able to express myself in both ways.
My art career started over 25 years ago after taking an introductory art class at an adult education art centre in Cape Town, S. Africa. Around that time, I studied ceramics with Maxi Heyman in Constantia, Cape Town, where I learnt so much about form and design whilst working in clay. I also studied with a well-known sculptor in Hout Bay, Cape Town, sculpting in clay and casting in ‘ciment fondue’.
I work predominantly in oils, acrylic, gouache, watercolour and mixed media. I love sketching and coming up with concepts that help me establish the message I wish to convey to the viewer. Narrative painting is probably my favourite as it allows me to ‘play’ with ‘hybrid animal/ bird’ concepts. My one series called the ‘Pink Flamigeon’ is a hybridised flamingo with a pigeon!
I have taught workshops in my home studio from time to time.
I have had several solo & group exhibitions in South Africa and in England. Many of my works are hung on walls in various countries.
